A performance to behold.
No, not Liverpool.
In the midst of Olympics, our attention was diverted to the start of the new Premier League season. Finally. For football fans, no drought is longer than the summer break, even with the occasional oasis in the form of international tournaments, the lack of football is killing. The anxiety was kickstarted with some fantasy football purchases, which I have decided against participating in it.
But whilst watching Boro fight it out against Spurs, my friend texted me to remind about the 100m final. Damn, I forgot! Thank God he reminded me. One of the most anticipated showdowns in Beijing. Asafa Powell, one of the most consistent sprinters out there, has been equalling and breaking his records for fun; Tyson Gay, the American revelation, running the fastest 100m in history (with aided wind); and Usain Bolt, the Jamaican from nowhere and ran the fastest recognized 100m in the world.
Gay amazingly failed to reach the final, leaving Powell and Bolt favourites to battle it out for gold. The 100m dash is a very short show, it is not like a football match where there's much to describe. Everyone got out of their starting blocks, and around 40m Bolt broke away from the rest of the pack, and with still 20m remaining, he already held his hands outstetch and pounded his chest in victory celebration. Amazingly, even with his celebratory acts before the finishing line, he broke his own world record, lowering 0.03 seconds for the new mark to be set at 9.69. And even more remarkable, he broke the world record without the assistance of tailwind.
From his celebrations, he probably did not want the world record that badly. When he realized he was leading way ahead, he was already celebrating his gold. A performance from a guy who was not even confirmed of participating in the 100m a month ago. Had he not outstetched his arms, had he not pounded his chest before the finishing line, probably he could have recorded around 9.6 or even lower. An absolutely 'unhuman' time. But the performance itself was not human already. Nobody runs a sub-9.7 with no tailwind. Even the past world records, all the runners did it with tailwinds.
When all the world records were tumbling in the Water Cube, even slicing off three to four seconds of the world mark with their fancy LZR Racer don't look as good as this.
Probably he purposely slowed down so that he could break his own record even more often. Let us hope he won that fair and square, because with such 'unhuman' performance, you are vulnerable to accusations. Such a performance is a joy to behold, and by being clean, he has such a big future to look forward to.
